Dr. Avery
Dr. Avery is a member of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and served as their State Delegate from 1999-2002. A member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) since 1989, Dr. Avery was board certified by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons in 1987 and recertified in 1995 and 2006. He currently serves as a certifying Oral Examiner for the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

 

Cumberland, Maine

Dr. Avery graduated from Williams College (‘77) and Dartmouth Medical School (‘80). He served his general surgery internship and residency at New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston from 1980-1982 and his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Rochester (New York), before becoming a clinical instructor at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry from 1985-1987. Dr. Avery has been a specialized arthroscopic sports medicine physician since moving to Maine in 1987.

A former collegiate ski racer, he is a physician for the U.S. Ski Team and has traveled extensively abroad with the men's and women's Alpine World Cup and Olympic Teams, covering their competitions regularly since 1987. Dr. Avery is also an orthopedic consultant for the Sunday River Ski Resort, and has a special interest in the study of skiing injuries, lecturing regularly on ski injury prevention techniques.

He has also co-authored and presented research papers on post-operative pain control after knee ACL reconstruction. A former team physician for Bowdoin College from 1987-2007, Dr. Avery was awarded the 2007 Polar Bear Award for his continued support of athletics at the school.

An avid cyclist, golfer, water skier, and motorsports enthusiast, he currently resides in Cumberland.
